By , January 9, 2013 2:16 pm

The fist Starbucks store in Vietnam will be open next to New World hotel.

When opened Starbucks will solve:

  • Trung Nguyen’s issue: inconsistency across stores in the chain
  • Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf’s issue: [menu] most drinks are overly sweet
  • Gloria Jean’s issue: [menu] tasteless cakes
  • Paris Baguette’s issue: the design is too metallic
  • Highlands’ issue: humdrum atmosphere, depreciated furniture
  • NYDC’s issue: food is overpriced, unsuitable for business
  • Tous les Jours’ issue: the focus is on breads and cakes, drinks are not that good
  • Local style coffee shop: no non-smoking area, tedious menu

Khai sáng

By , December 18, 2012 4:12 am

Thông tin tổng thể này có synergy nên “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts”.

d = aln(h) + c + ε

d: distance

a: hệ số (coefficient)

h: height

c: const

Vietnamese user behavior on forums

By , November 4, 2012 10:51 am

This is a repost from a discussion with my friends on Facebook.

  1. Forums still account for 65% online activities in Vietnam. Sources: two internet market research teams and their figures seem to match.
  2. Forum allows or even promotes anonymity which many East Asian (Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese) users prefer.
  3. Forum is content-focused so posters on forums feel they can blend in the crowd, a behavior collectivistic Vietnamese prefer.
  4. Some vertical forums are very deep: WebTreTho.com on mon & baby care, Otofun on vehicles, vOz on IT and gossip… Deep: quality of content, online ad inventory, and engagement of respective communities.

Show me the money: that niché

By , November 3, 2012 5:59 pm

In the private equity life I have been most thrilled when I stumble upon companies which operate in niché markets, offering products that you almost never thought of.

For instance, one manufactures a tiny aluminum accessory of a beverage bottle, supplying for all major beer and beverage companies down the stream. Another one produces certain chemicals from seafood extracts.

Because of their niche-ness and exclusivity, these firms have virtually no competitors. The lack of competition makes them almost monopoly even without political grounding.

Investing in these firms is almost a safe bet.

The private equity world amazes me, every time.

Dropbox’s The Great Space Race

By , October 16, 2012 3:47 am

If you are a college student anywhere in the world, Dropbox just launched an interesting new program, The Great Space Race, which will run for the next eight weeks and allow college students to get up to 25GB of free Dropbox storage for the next two years. To qualify for the extra space, students have to register here with their school email addresses and the more students at each school sign up, the more storage space they will get.

Schools get one point for every student who signs up and two points for everybody who completes the “Get Started” guide. Every student who signs up gets an extra 3 GB for two years by default. After that, they will earn more as their schools pass each of Dropbox’s three pre-set thresholds. Dropbox will set different thresholds for every participating school.

If you happen to have more than one school email, choose the one you suspect will earn you more points.

Blackberry 10: a suicidal move by RIM

By , September 30, 2012 11:15 am

I still love Blackberry QWERTY keyboard.

The pain of using Blackberry is apps. Fewer and fewer developers like to code apps for BBOS.

And now RIM is releasing two Blackberries with TWO different screen size.

This may look like giving choices to customers, but it is more likely a suicidal move as it drives developers away.

Sadly, while I miss the QWERTY keyboard badly, I am not buying Blackberry 10 N.
