Life for rent

Đại loại có bạn khinh bỉ các khởi nghiệp mà mình mentor “khác startup ở nước ngoài” quá.

Điểm khác của startup ta và startup tây có rất nhiều mổ xẻ rồi, mình chỉ nói một khía cạnh rất nhỏ ít được nhắc đến: con đại gia.

Vì có quá nhiều startup thành công không thể nói hết nên tạm lấy ra ba ví dụ.

1. Mẹ của Bill Gates là Uỷ viên HĐQT công ty tài chính đích thân dẫn con trai đến gặp IBM là trùm công nghệ lúc đó. Ông ngoại ảnh là Chủ tịch ngân hàng đã dạy ảnh cách đối phó và hất cẳng IBM. Bố ảnh là luật sư đã dạy ảnh cách cạnh tranh độc quyền trong ngành. Bạn Warren Buffett đã dạy ảnh cách trở mặt với cộng sự và tàn nhẫn trong corporate governance. Với IQ ước tính khoảng 170 và điểm SAT 1590/1600 thì Bill Gates làm gì chả được.

2. Cả gia đình Zuckerberg nhào vào hỗ trợ Mark làm TheFacebook cực kỳ hiệu quả. Mẹ là bác sĩ tâm thần, chị gái học Tâm Lý học ở Harvard và vào làm cùng em trai, bố là nha sĩ. So với Friendster và MySpace thì có vẻ TheFacebook nhẹ nhàng hơn về cảm xúc nhưng kỳ thật xảo trá hơn hẳn trong cách điều khiển tâm lý người dùng.

3. Gia đình luật sư của Evan Spiegel đã chỉ cho Ev về những nỗi bất an (insecurity) và nỗi sợ (fear) của loài người. Từ đó Ev đã nuôi dưỡng cho chủ nghĩa khoái lạc (hedonism) và tính tự yêu bản thân (narcissism) trong Snapchat. Giới luật sự đứng đằng sau những những thương vụ mua bán sáp nhập, thâu tóm, thôn tính, ăn thịt lẫn nhau nên Ev tự tin từ chối Mark Zuckerberg thẳng mặt.

Larry Page, Peter Thiel, Travis Kalanick… cũng đều có những câu chuyện rất hay nhưng 3 là đủ rồi.

Tóm lại, startup ta thua kém “startup nước ngoài” về chuyện chính là thị trường, chuyên môn, kỹ năng rồi. Giờ còn thua cả ô dù, quan hệ, đi cửa sau, chung chi, thủ đoạn, móc nối, bợ đít, phản bội, bán đứng nhau… thì sao giờ. Người ta thông minh + bố giàu ra startup còn dễ chết thì sinh viên nghèo biết sao mà sống nổi với đời.

Cố gắng hết sức mình thôi chứ sao. Ngu thì không được lười mà.

Observations from Facebook's business

The previous article of mine sketched the architecture of Facebook’s business.

Bloomberg recently detailed how advertising, the main source of income, is done on Facebook.

Generally, some points from a business perspective can be drawn from this:

  1. Facebook turns market research from “push” to “pull”. Facebook users, who respectively are businesses’ consumers, are given the platform and are tempted to share their preferences in lifestyle without being directly asked by market research people.
  2. Lesson: while Sandberg affirmed “You want to target everyone? We can give you that“, more luxury products/services have higher chance to win than convenient goods. The reason is that people (consumers) usually associate themselves with things they believe make them perceived by their connections as connoisseur. Coca cola is a nice exception to this, partly because it is one of the most expensive brands in the world.
  3. Effects of relationship-centric of Facebook
    • Segment the market for businesses. People with similar demographic characteristics can be grouped together. It is more difficult to do so on ego-centric networks like MySpace
    • People are influenced by their friends and families. Marketing techniques using social and psychological influence can be used

Toward Enterprise 2.0 – positioning the 2.0 characteristics in an Enterprise and some suggestions for FPT

1. Introduction

This article discusses implications behind the adoption of a “2.0” approach to corporate management. This article is built on and extends the introductory discussion of an FPT HR representative on their application of 2.0 to internal communications. It seeks an equivalent position of the 2.0 characteristics within an organization. Basing on this finding, recommendations are given to FPT.

Đặc điểm ẩn danh cho phép nhiều người được nói thẳng nói thật ý kiến và cả các bức xúc của mình trong công việc hay comment thoải mái về các chính sách công ty mà ko sợ lộ mặt.
Những cái này có thể nhiều công ty đã áp dụng như “học thuật” hóa thì được gọi là quản trị 2.0.

2. The position of the 2.0 characteristics

2a. Web 2.0 is about Communication. Is Enterprise 2.0 about Communication?

Basing on the comment from vanbich, the idea of FPT 2.0 is to provide channels and facilities for their employees to communicate with one another and with leaders.

At first, it seems sensible given light that a Web 2.0 product provides platforms for its users to communicate and share information with one another. And users do this with purposes.

Some examples of Web 2.0 products:

While we see that the total scale of a Web 2.0 product is allow Communication, the total scale of an Enterprise is much larger than that. We want to revise the ‘conventional’ enterprise:

That is the full scale of an Enterprise. Communication plays an important role, but does not take up entirely its operations.

So how do we map it more precisely?

2b. Here is what I visual it: mapping between two 2.0 entities

Firstly, as we know that communication is the main activity of a Web 2.0 product, it is important to find out what is the main activity of an Enterprise. As from figure 2, the main activity of an enterprise is Production and/or Providing Services.

Secondly, it is important to characterize the style of communication in Web 2.0 products so that we can do the same on the style of production of an enterprise.

What best describes “multi-directional” and “decentralized”? It is autonomous. People in the 2.0 sphere communicate autonomously and are responsible for their behaviors.

Combining these two findings, here is what I propose the mapping between a Web 2.0 product and an Enterprise:

At full scale, the applied 2.0 characteristics does not only involve open and partially anonymous communication, but reach the level of autonomy in production.

3. Some considerations

  1. It’s easier for startups than for an established company.
    Think about Google. It had been famous for its anti-corporate culture at the first days. As the company becomes mature, corporate issues start to emerge.
  2. Does the structure of the company make it reasonable to build autonomous teams/divisions?
  3. Does the culture of the company and the culture of the society make it reasonable to build autonomous teams/divisions?
  4. How ready are the employees, in terms of capability and mentality, to be autonomous?
  5. Autonomous, together with self-directed communication is not new. It traces back to 1970s and Motorola, Xerox, AT&T and so on. However, it might be new to Vietnam.

4. Some recommendations for FPT toward 2.0

  1. Select mature teams to build autonomy
  2. Delayer these teams
  3. Allow (sometimes dramatic) changes in structure, culture and mentality
  4. Allow (sometimes dramatic) changes in personnel management and resource allocation
  5. Treat this as on-going experiment

Benefits:

  1. Bring the “2.0 spirit” to the company as leaders desire
  2. Increase innovation
  3. Reduce cost, especially management overhead
  4. Reduce absenteeism
  5. Identify unofficial leaders of the teams in addition to the existing leadership training program

5. Summary

Changes in production characteristics, rather than sheerly in communication, reflect the full-scale shift within an Enterprise. Analyzing Web 2.0 characteristics leads us to autonomy. Whether and how FPT will implement it is interesting to observe. The implications of recommendations in this article go beyond social media, product management and technology companies to leadership generally.

6. Reflection

It has been challenging and exciting to write this. The excitement was how I can link seemingly scattered parts of my knowledge to form a cohesion piece of consultation – something I love doing. The great challenge lies in the idea of evaluating a big, established, known and loved company. Nevertheless, if I want to learn, first thing first, I must dare the keyboard discussion.

The e-Learning 2.0 experience

The blog craze started in 2004, MySpace came out in 2002. From then till now, Web 2.0 has penetrated deeply into our lives.

You may have heard the buzz: it’s all about communications, exchange information and expressing the ego.

Have you thought of utilizing all those things for learning?

Recently I’ve been very aggressive on the net to see how we can use the applications for learning, and here I am with my key findings:

The requirements

Let’s imagine a very familiar study scenario: you’re assigned into a group to do a research on topic X.

Traditionally, the group would rely on emails, phone calls and IM to communicate and collaborate. Have you found these media difficult to classify your information?

This is how I would use Web 2.0 for learning

1. Search for information with Search EngineS

Obviously, information searching starts with search engines.

I have some hints for this:

  1. Don’t just use Google. Try Yahoo! search, Live search, Ask search and other engines. They give different results and thus, relevant information might be found from ones other than Google
  2. Try Google on different region settings. google.com/ncr (international version) yields different results from google.com.vn
  3. Try different keywords and keyword combination. Also, exploit the operators
  4. Also search for images. At least Google, Yahoo! and Live support this. Images are useful for illustrating your ideas and, in some cases, give you additional information.

2. Ask your questions

Use Q&A service such as LinkedIn Answers to ask questions and receive information from professionals.

3. Make information comes to you with RSS

Normally you go out for information. Think about making information come to you?

Use RSS for this.

For example, if I’m looking for “globalization”, I would take these steps

  1. Go to wordpress.com/tags/globalization
  2. Get the RSS of this tag
  3. Subscribe the RSS into a feed reader like Google Reader

Then check with the feed reader everyday to see if relevant information comes in.

You can also use Yahoo! Pipes to aggregate the feeds. Click here to view videos on Yahoo! Pipes

Try exploring different sources of information you can use this trick.

4. Share links with bookmark-sharing sites

If I encounter useful webpages, I would want to share it with my group mates.

Using email would bury the link under heaps of other information. Sharing through IM stands the risk of losing the message when the program lags.

So I would bookmark the site using del.icio.us and use the function “links for friend” to share the link.

5. Blog your group’s findings on group-blog powered platform

WordPress supports multiple-author. I would want our group members to blog our research everyday on our blog. This is not superficial. It helps us

  1. Collect information, thoughts, findings, analysis and intermediate conclusions
  2. Track each member’s progress
  3. Present to the lecturer our growth

5b. Share micro details

This is optional though. Some information might be very detailed and we want quick sharing methods. I would connect my mobile phone to Twitter and quickly update my thoughts on the way.

6. Schedule activities with Calendars

Schedule activities such as meetings, field trips with Google Calendar

7. Watch and learn

Go to Youtube, not to entertain, but to learn from podcasters on the topic.

11. Publish your research

Publish your research as presentations on slideshare or documents on scribd to share your knowledge engage in discussion on the topic.

There are just so much!

How’re you gonna navigate around them all?

Well, one solution is to use a homepage service like netvibes to put all these services together.

Why all these?

Too complicated? Well here are the reasons why I would do it this way

  1. Better organization of information. No email confusion
  2. Exhaustive analysis. You write on the way so no information is missed
  3. Better collaboration
  4. Man, isn’t it fun?

I know it would be much easier for you just to email. But how much time have you spent searching for information later on? I’d rather spend the time to get things organized first, then make it easier later to focus more on creating contents.

And I’m pretty sure of one thing: just next year, this entry will be outdated because many new services will come out. Semantic web, mobile apps are just a few to predict.

It’s not a fashionable fad or a time-killer, it’s a shift in the way we can be more effective. Do you want to miss the train trend?

But you know, all these will never happen if digital divide hasn’t been closed.

Technology proficiency and more importantly, community habit is a big gap. I want my team to do so, but other teams may not, so some of my team members may argue “why do we have to!”

With the internet connection speed in Vietnam, using Google Docs et al is insane.

Today, a world that is flat is till a romantic dream for me.

Facebook vs. Orkut in Photo sharing

I admit that what kept me on Facebook for so long is its ability to host photos. I’m really happy how Photos and Photo upload work in Facebook.

The only thing I don’t like about it is that it auto-resizes photos to 604px width.

I don’t use MySpace, unfortunately.

The third most popular social networking site is Orkut, and I have some friends there.

I’ll just make a comparison on my most frequently used feature: Photo sharing.

You may have heard the buzz: it’s all about communications, exchange information and expressing the ego.

Have you thought of utilizing all those things for learning?
